ROSES ๐น what to do with your roses during autumn - this is what I do, we are in Rotorua so its quite mild I don't prune my Roses until very late July / August after some decent frosts. ๐ก Stop dead heading- dead heading roses encourages them to put out new growth which we dont want. I stop dead heading around Easter. ๐ก Continue to weed your rose beds & clear and debris from your roses - leaf litter etc as it falls, I put this in my general rubbish or you can incinerate it but I never compost this as often it will carry unwanted bugs + spores etc this time of year that you dont want carried through to the next season. ๐ก Around mid/late june - optional- you can spray with lime sulfur to give them a bit of a clean up ( NOTE- you don't have to do this if you dont like spraying some years i dont do this one but I always copper spray after pruning) ๐ก Late July / August I prune my roses, im a extremely hard pruner then I give them a good copper spray ( general rule of thumb is prune roses from mid winter onwards but if you do yours earlier thats fine do whatever works for you) To get rid of lichen on roses you can give them a gentle scrub with a wire brush or toothbrush or Alternatively sulfur spray will help clean that up too. * the apricot coloured rose in this video is "Amber flush" avaliable from Matthew's roses nz If im pruning wedding venues that have spring bookings ill prune some roses ( often not all ) about 7wks prior to the dates to ensure some bloomsButton

Limelight hydrangeas This time of year the heads dry out and look quite terrible, you can leave them on i find the heads start to drop off and blow all around the place like tumbleweeds so if your wanting to tidy them up but its not time to prune you can just snap or snip off the heads then leave the plant alone until pruning time I'll put up a pruning video of these as paniculata hydrangeas require a bit of a different prune. This is what I do everyone does things differently and thats ok.Button
